"Nishabd"- Speechless, I guess that's what it means. A RGV Factory production directed by RGV himself after a long hiatus (last movie he directed was “Sarkar” I guess). So after all those gangster movies, Mr. Verma seems hell-bent on reforming his image and he does pull it off with aplomb in “Nishabd”. How? Well u might have read hazaar reviews by now, just add mine to that list.Whatz the story about? howz been the reviews? if ur looking for all this stuff check it out in this site:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nishabd.Am not gonna go into all those details. The Movie has a simple story line of an aging father falling in love with his daughter’s friend. So what makes “Nishabd” special? The treatment. Ram Gopal verma just makes the whole atmosphere resplendent with some “Factory” typicals including a “never-heard” off concept, beautylicious photography and cinematography, fresh and gravitating music. And add to this Mr. Big B, u have a good movie. I have never witnessed such and suttle performance from Amitabh bachan. Last time I was awed by his performance was in “Deewar”. The expressions, body language, all falling into place at the right time. I had thought Mr Big B had mistaken “sobbing” for acting after watching movies like “K3G”, “Baabul”, Baaghbaan, “Black etc. not that he doesn’t cry in “Nishabd” but the tears are much more meaningful here. So how and where do I start? The movie deals with this family where the father 80 yrs old falls for his daughter’s friend and the subsequent repercussions. Usually, such concepts are very sensitive and delicate with high probabilities of goofing up the whole story at the end of it. As the movie draws to a close, I was pretty much apprehensive about this aspect. In fact at the end of movie I was pretty much puzzled. It was like “are we done with the movie?”, “hey, u can’t end the movie on this note”. The movie in fact ends with the father (Amitabh) telling his brother in law (Nasser) that he has been outcast. His daughter is going to US, his wife doesn’t talk to him, and “Jiah is not there too”. At that instant, I felt like “Wow, check out this guy, he is not repentant at all of his acts. Shouldn’t he have come over his madness? He should have changed his mindset right?” well, isn’t that supposed to be the right ending. That’s the greatest success of the movie. As the movie draws to a close, it raises numerous questions “should the father have changed himself? Should the family have accepted him rather than outcast him? Had he cheated his wife and daughter? Was all this mere infatuation? Did he fall for the girl out of his lust? Was the father right when he sent away the girl admonishing her rather than handling it sensitively? Should the father die? And u want to draw up your own conclusions based on how you answered each of these questions and this is where u r stumped by the director. All he wanted to do here was tell a story, a story where the old guy discovered love in a girl out of no intention of his and he is just not able to come over it. Isn’t that true, how many times we encounter situations where something happens out of the blue and we have nothing to reason it out. In fact, the first love of anybody’s life too follows a similar path, and at the end of it you want to bury it but bury it safely unhurt so that you can regurgitate it whenever u find time to and enjoy the sweet nothings you experienced. Voila!!!! Sounds good, but very very difficult to construct a story and subsequently duplicate in equal performances. Considering that jiah khan is pretty much novice in the industry, the movie had to be a Big B show and he does it with aplomb here. Photography:Amazing photography. There’s always a tint of gloom around with clouds hovering around. A blue tint encompasses the screen throughout. I think it’s metaphoric of the events in the movie. The clouds hover around throughout the first half till the relationship builds between the protagonists. Once it is revealed to the family that amitabh is in love with jiah, the clouds pour out and it keeps raining. The movie ends with the rain continuing. Interestingly, most of the scenes are close-ups. Instead of focusing on the setting as such, the camera is trained on the characters as they speak. The camera angles are great and each and every expression and emotion is captured well. There are scenes which don’t have any music or sounds except the protagonists talking to each other. You dance along with the characters as the tension rises and falls and you are entirely captivated as it happens. There’s this scene where amitabh, jiah and revathy are sitting across a table having their dinner. Jiah runs her feet on amitabh’s legs. He’s awed. As u watch it, u are amazed and imagine what will happen next? Something lustful, u expect him to do something absurd. But, then he laughs and laughs and you start laughing too. He just keeps laughing. That scene was nicely executed. What else? Am just conjuring some more things to add on. will repost my views once they are done.
